Superheroes for Kids Week: Captain Underpants

Captain Underpants is the scourge of teachers everywhere. A entire book series about two boys who pull pranks on teachers, classmates and family which features a superhero that runs around in his underwear. But it is a bona-fide success and is a funny irreverent look at superheros in a style that young boys love.

Harold and George are two young boys who love pulling pranks. And when their pranks have consequences, they are backed into a corner. A $4 hypno ring rescues them from the clutches of their evil principal and turns him into the real life version of the comic book superhero that had written about, Captain Underpants. A superhero that runs around with a cap and underwear. With gross jokes about bodily functions and a underwear clad superhero, what’s not to love. The books are mostly text, but do have 2-3 comic book stories in them. They also contain flip-o-rama pages, which are two pages of pictures that you flip back and forth to create animation.

David Pilkey has created a monster in the Captain Underpants, which has been frequently banned from schools. But for younger kids, it is a fun and exciting story that combines underwear, superheroes and making fun of school figures. Highly recommended.
