DVD You Should Own – Duckman Season One & Two

Duckman is a private eye and family man. And he wants to know “What the hell are YOU looking at?!?”. What started as a one shot comic by creator Everett Peck was then brought onto TV by the team that later brought us Rugrats and punctuated with a soundtrack by Frank Zappa (season one only). It’s a funny and irreverent show that couldn’t keep it’s humor past the second season and never had the cult following of other shows, but it’s a wonderful show.

Jason Alexander was one angry duck. He played the lead character of Duckman, a bad private detective and worse father. His wife died and was left with the custody of his three kids (two of whom share a body). Charles and Mambo are Siamese twins that are near geniuses and Ajax has below room temperature IQ. His late wife’s twin sister Bernice comes to watch the kids and brings the almost comatose Grandmama to the house with her. Helping his detective business is his partner Cornfed (who is a combination of the Dalai Lama and MacGyver) and his two overly-PC care bear receptionists Fluffy and Uranus.

Opposing Duckman is his mortal enemy King Chicken, who attempts to hurt Duckman by promoting an unfunny PC comic or by making Ajax into a genius. The plots are generally silly and frequently have Duckman botch everything up only to be saved by his family or Cornfed. Cornfed, who talks in a monotone, usually steals the show with his deductions or comments.

Duckman: Did I ever tell you my Dad’s last words to me?
Cornfed: “Careful, son, I don’t think the safety is on.”
Duckman: Before that!

The early 90s were a hotbed of strange adult cartoons with Ren & Stimpy and Beavis and Butthead, but Duckman was there as well and was just as funny, but has been mostly forgotten. Go and find it and watch it.
