One of my guilty pleasure shows is Burn Notice. The A-Teamish spy show is a fun little show that isn’t too serious and has enough explosions and spy tips to make a fun hour. And with the inimitable Bruce Campbell in a supporting role, then what else is there to say. So, just for fun, the Burn Notice team decided to give the fans a little fun and show a prequel featuring Bruce Campbell in The Fall of Sam Axe. It was on this past weekend, but with Game of Thrones premiering, I just didn’t have time to watch it until tonight. So, how did Sam Axe end up in Miami?
First things first. This is a silly prequel to a silly show. The whole reason to watch is for some laughs, explosions and plot twists. And the movie had it all. Including the Columbian rebels nicknaming Bruce Campbell as The Chin and the origin of Sam’s Chuck Finley name. There were also some trademark Burn Notice explosions (which you can tell because of the way it goes in slow motion as people fall away from the explosion).
Having said that, it was entirely forgettable. Sam gets in trouble and is sent to investigate a rebel uprising in Columbia on behalf of the Columbian government, who want money and supplies to fight them off. Sam finds out that the apparent storyline is not exactly what he was led to believe. He then lets his personal judgement of right and wrong get in the way of his official duties. We also have a Michael Westen cameo (and reference to Fiona) as a fun gotcha (especially since Jeffrey Donovan was directing).
Overall it was a pleasant diverting two hours of explosions and exposition. It’s not something I would recommend watching over and over and (as many have noted) it could have been told in half the time without losing anything important. Enjoyable but forgettable is the best it can offer.
