Camelot after 3 episodes

And I’m done. I reviewed the pilot of Camelot on Starz when it previewed at the end of February. As I noted at the time, the only good parts of the pilot were Merlin, Lot and Morgan. For those of you who watching, you know what has happened to those characters. I’ll go into it a little bit and explain why I’ve decided to stop watching after the break. Warning for those who haven’t seen it. There will be spoilers.

Lot (played by James Purefoy) was one of the best things about the show and they killed him off. And as the episodes went on, both Merlin and Morgan were just kind of shoved to the side. Morgan had some good scenes with Lot, but once he died, she seems to just be there as a long-term threat to Arthur, but without anything to do. Merlin was wonderful in the pilot, but has been mainly lurking around the edge in the following two episodes.

The show has introduced a couple new characters: Leontes and Guinevere. Leontes was one of Arthur’s fathers most loyal knights and he has thrown his lot in with Arthur. And even helps rescue Arthur after the obligatory sword in the stone scene. Guinevere shows up first in Arthur’s dreams and then on a beach. They meet cute with her threatening to slit Arthur’s throat and then they later hook up. Along the way she forgets to mention that she is engaged to Leontes and has not changed her plans to marry him. Both characters are basically a checklist of characteristics without any real characters behind them. If either left tomorrow, I don’t know that anyone would notice or care. But we know that Guinevere’s destiny with Arthur (because he dreamed of her) and that Leontes is just there to provide a roadblock.

Overall, the show has quickly grown boring. I can’t tell if they are pacing things too slowly or really have no idea where they are going for this season. Either way, I’m not sure I want to continue watching. Especially with a limited TV viewing time and Game of Thrones starting this weekend, I’m done with Camelot.
