In a idea that sounds very familiar to viewer of V, an alien invasion has taken over Earth and a rag-tag bunch of survivors are out to win it back. But, unlike that show, Falling Skies isn’t half bad. Starring Noah Wylie and pretty much no one else you would have heard of (except possibly Colin Cunningham), Falling Skies is fairly standard alien invasion genre stuff, but it is handled well. So, let’s see what’s happening with it.
Noah Wylie’s beard is an ex-history professor named Tom Mason, who is now second in command to George Carlin look-a-like Commander Weaver. Tom has two sons (Hal, an older teen and Matt, a pre-teen) who are in the rebellion with him. Tom is also wanting to search for his missing son Ben. We mainly follow Tom on his missions to get supplies and weapons. In our first mission, Tom and Hal lead a mission for supplies and Hal catches a glimpse of Ben.
Then in our second mission, Tom and Hal lead a group of soldiers to an armory to get weapons. But they are waylaid by a group of criminals (led by Colin Cunningham’s John Pope) who capture them and try to exchange them for some weapons.
The show isn’t new and is fairly thin. There are no exciting characters (with the possible exception of John Pope), but it’s well done. But I do wonder how well mediocre characters and plot will last unless they start upping the game somewhat. Mildly recommended, but I’ll probably watch until I get bored.
