It’s been 6 episodes into season one of Alphas and let’s go and see how it’s doing. Overall, it’s promising and it appears that the ratings have stabilized (so hopefully it will make it to season two). Let’s go over what has worked and what hasn’t so far.
If there is one thing the show has done well, it’s bringing us into the characters lives and getting to know them. Each episode so far has (more or less) focused on one of the Alphas and let the viewers see them beyond just their powers. We get to know the characters and who they are. For instance the episode featuring Gary had him interacting with a woman who had no speech abilities, but had found a way to communicate. The episode shows Gary (who is a high functioning autistic) working on his own and becoming more independent. We get to see why Rachel is somewhat neurotic, what happened to Bill that makes him overbearing and pushing for more tactical approach. And the best part is that there is a decent story behind all of the growth.
There have been hints of a larger story (especially with the Binghamton Special Research Facility), but we really haven’t gotten to a larger mythology or continuing storyline yet. I’m hopeful that the second half of the season will bring these to the forefront now that we have been introduced (in depth) with all the characters. I’d really hate the series to devolve into an Alpha of the week plot line.
Overall, I’m cautiously optimistic that the series will continue being good (and that it will be back for a second season). I’ve been enjoying it so far and h will continue watching it.
I am really curious…does anyone else find the dialogue for this show juvenile and annoying? Supposedly these people with wonderful abilities have the emotional maturity of most 12 year olds! The incessant angst of grown adults is beyond irritating! The premise of the show is great…the writing is horrendous!
