Takio by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Oeming

I hadn’t heard about Takio before I saw it in the library. But when I saw that it was from the creators of Powers (Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Oeming) based off an idea by Bendis’ oldest daughter Olivia, I knew I had to read it. It’s an all-ages superhero comic only with a story that features mostly girls. It’s a great idea for an under served market. So let’s go meet the heroes.

Taki is a high school girl who’s forced to take her seven year old sister everywhere due to their overprotective mother (who’s always offscreen). When Taki gets fed up at home and goes to see her best friend Kelly Sue, she is forced to bring Olivia along. But Kelly Sue’s father just got fired and he wasn’t the most mentally stable person to start with. One teen girl argument later, the house explodes and wouldn’t you know it Taki and Olivia have super powers. Olivia refers to the powers as “Kung Fu Telekinesis” as they have control over some sort of mental energy power that manifests itself when they do Kung Fu moves.

The girls aren’t sure what to do (besides hide the powers), but Olivia thinks they should be a super hero team named Takio. Kelly Sue’s dad starts putting the pieces together and tries to capture Taki and Olivia, but they use their powers to defend themselves. That’s when they discover that Kelly Sue has powers of her own. Her dad is putting Kelly Sue in a position to try and keep an eye on the girls until he can figure out what to do.

Overall it’s a cute book with a decent introduction to a new super hero team. The art is good and the story and characters are well done. I’m not sure that I’m the core audience for this book, but it looks perfect for the pre-teen super hero fangirl. Recommended for that group
