Hanna Movie Review

It looked vaguely interesting when it came out in theaters last summer, but I never got around to going and seeing Hanna. The movie looked like a bad rehash of La Femme Nikita without any of the messy things (like a plot or character development) and I was pretty much right. But if you’re looking for a decent action flick, it’s not horrible. Let’s check it out.

The movie starts with our main character (Hanna) killing a moose and then dealing with a strange man who attacks her. The strange man is Erik, her father. Years ago, Erik was a CIA operative, but he went missing. Hanna tells Erik she’s ready for her mission and Erik gives her a transponder to turn on when she’s ready. After she turns on the transponder, a special ops squad goes to retrieve Erik. Hanna is found with two dead soldiers. The assumption is that Erik killed them and escaped. Hanna is taken to a secret base where a psychiatrist is unable to get any information out of her. Hanna insists on seeing Marissa (who was Erik’s boss and who Erik warned wanted to kill Erik and Hanna). A fake Marissa is sent in and Hanna ends up killing her and escaping from the base.

Hanna then goes on the run and ends up making friends with a girl around her age. After some adventures, Hanna is finally found by Erik, who tells her the truth. Hanna was the product of a genetic experiment to make better soldiers. The project was shut down and all subjects were killed, except Erik escaped with Hanna and raised her as his daughter. The final part of the movie is Erik and Hanna trying to escape Marissa.

The movie is basically mindless entertainment with a couple plot points thrown in to shock the viewer. There is pretty much no character development and the plot is fairly thin. I don’t see any reason to recommend the movie, except that it’s not boring and has a few good action scenes. Save your time and see La Femme Nikata instead. Not recommended.
