Well, that was something. I’ll briefly touch on the plot of the movie, since judging by the box office everyone’s already seen the movie. After this weekend’s box office, I’m pretty sure Whedon could name any project and any budget and he’ll get it. The only director who has more power than Whedon right now is probably James Cameron (a $2 BILLION movie get’s you a lot of respect). So, I’m pretty curious what Whedon will want to do next. So, Avengers Assemble, I mean let’s get to the review.
The movie does a great job building on top of the last few Marvel movies. Loki, fresh off the events of Thor, negotiates an army of Chitauri to help him invade and take over the Earth. The army will be brought to Earth by the Tesseract (last seen in the Captain America movie). So, Loki invades the Shield HQ and steals the Tesseract, while enslaving Clint Barton (Hawkeye) and Dr. Erik Selvig(fresh off the events of Thor as well). After Loki makes his escape, Nick Fury puts the Avengers initiative into action.
Gathering Black Widow, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America and Bruce Banner together, they look to capture Loki and find the Tesseract (while rescuing Barton and Selvig). There is the obligatory hero-on-hero fight scene and then the heroes get the upper hand (and realize that the villain was always in control). This leads, of course, to the giant battle for the world at the end: The Avengers against the Chitauri and Loki.
There is nothing new in the film. If you’ve read Avengers comics or seen any of the individual movies previously, you’ll get exactly what you were expecting. But Whedon does it so well. He gives viewers exactly what they were expecting and makes it seem new and fresh and exciting. He mixes action, adventure, comedy and characters so well that everything just works. Avengers is probably the best pure comic book superhero movie I’ve ever seen. Better than the Nolan Batman movies. Better than the Spider-man movies. Better than anything else. It’s everything that Jack Kirby and Stan Lee wanted to do when the created the Avengers in the first place. Go see the movie. You will enjoy it.
