So far the Syfy in the US has shown 8 episodes of Continuum as of last night. Episode 8, Playtime, was a wonderful turning point for the series (even while the main story of virtually controlled killers was fairly silly). Let’s take a look at what this turning point is and what it means for the long term series. Warning, there are spoilers ahead. If you don’t want spoilers for the events through episode 8, then don’t go forward.
As I mentioned above, the virtual killer idea (especially with the epic hacker battle for Keira’s mind) was fairly silly. But Alec finding a message to himself from the future in Kiera’s suit changes the entire complexion of the series. Where we once thought that Kiera being sent back into the past was an accident, now that it might have been part of a plan.
Since we know that Kiera’s husband works for Alec in the future, there are a lot more questions (and possibilities) about larger stories then assumed. This brings up questions about what Liber8 is doing in the past and is it coordinating with future Alec? Is Alex for or against the corporate future that Liber8 is fighting against? And, most importantly, what is Kiera’s role in all of this, past or present?
So, while the episode itself was disappointing, the ongoing storyline just got a whole lot more interesting.
