Cabin in the Woods review

I’m running behind on seeing movies. Generally, I’ve been too busy to see most movies at the theater. There are some movies that I hear a lot about, but don’t have a lot of interest in seeing. Cabin in the Woods fits into this category. I’m a big Joss Whedon fan and I had heard some good things about it, but I’m not a huge horror fan, so I didn’t run out to see it. I finally wound up seeing it recently and found that it was much better as an idea of a movie, than it was as an actual movie.

Fray by Joss Whedon, Karl Moline and Andy Owens

Long, long time ago, back in the last decade of the twentieth century, current hot writer/director Joss Whedon had a movie about a young girl who has the power (and responsibility) to kill vampires and protect the world. The movie wasn’t that good, but somehow mutated into a cult show that survived for 7 seasons (and had a spinoff that lasted another 5 seasons). As the shows were wrapping up, Whedon had an idea (a wonderful, *awful* idea) to throw his beloved idea into the far future. So, he dipped his toe into the comic book world and came up with Fray. The basic idea is a slayer in the far future. So, let’s check out what happened.

Avengers review

Well, that was something. I’ll briefly touch on the plot of the movie, since judging by the box office everyone’s already seen the movie. After this weekend’s box office, I’m pretty sure Whedon could name any project and any budget and he’ll get it. The only director who has more power than Whedon right now is probably James Cameron (a $2 BILLION movie get’s you a lot of respect). So, I’m pretty curious what Whedon will want to do next. So, Avengers Assemble, I mean let’s get to the review.

Joss Whedon GQ Interview

Joss Whedon is kinda busy right now. He just had a horror film (The Cabin in the Woods) released and is premiering (today in the US) THE tent pole movie of 2012, The Avengers. To go along with all his work, there is a bunch of media about him, the best of which is this GQ article. It goes into detail about his career. From Buffy (the movie) to script doctor to Buffy (the show) and Angel. Then two canceled Fox shows and a web success and a well-received (but mediocre box office) movie. This doesn’t exactly look like the profile of someone that would be handed the reins to The Avengers. But the article talks about this in detail. Go read it.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog review

I was re-watching Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog today when I suddenly realized that I had never reviewed it. Conceived and filmed during the 2007-2008 Writer’s strike by Joss Whedon, his two brother’s (Zach and Jed) and Jed’s wife Maurissa Tancharoen, the show came out during the summer of 2008 to rave reviews and a fresh eye towards online video. Possibly (I vaguely remember Whedon discussing it when it came out) influenced by Felicia Day’s first season of The Guild, the Whedon family wanted to do something online that would have higher production values. Bringing in Neil Patrick Harris and several people that Joss Whedon had previously worked with (including Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion) and created a funny, musical superhero love story. So, what exactly is Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog?

Firefly back on Cable

EW is reporting that the Science Channel has picked up reruns of Firefly and will be airing…with some extras.

The Science Channel has acquired the rights to the cult-hit and will air the series in its short-lived entirety, plus some new extras. Science Channel will wrap each episode with interstitial segments starring renowned physicist Dr. Michio Kaku, who will discuss the theoretical science behind the show’s sci-fi concepts.

The article also has a nice, brief interview with Nathon Fillion.

Serenity: The Shepherd’s Tale by the Whedons

During the show Firefly, one of the more entertaining and mysterious characters was Shepherd Book. He was a man of faith who wasn’t a stranger to violence*. His past was hinted at being more complex and mysterious and not spoken of. You could almost sense the other crew members wanting to ask him, but refraining. With the early cancellation (as well as Book’s part in Serenity), one of the big questions never answered was about Book’s past. Now, with Serenity: The Shepherd’s Tale, written by Joss Whedon and his brother Zack, we finally get our answers. So what is Book’s story?

*One of my favorite scenes in Firefly is when the crew is going in to rescue Mal and Zoe asks Book about his faith:Zoë: Preacher, don’t the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killin’? Book: Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.
