Red Tails Preview

In addition to the Star Wars TV show, George Lucas and Rick McCallum have been working on the new movie (coming out next week) Red Tails. You can see a preview of the first seven minutes (and an interview with George Lucas as well)

Directed by TV helmer Anthony Hemingway with some re-shoots by Lucas himself when Hemingway was busy with Treme (production started in 2009 and had a few breaks), the film is based on the true stories of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all African-American aerial combat unit and their heroic adventures during World War II.

It has some interesting science fiction links. Not only with George Lucas, but the writers are John Ridley (author of the super hero novel Those Who Walk In Darkness and its sequel) and Aaron McGruder (creator of the Boondocks comic strip and TV show).

While it’s not science fiction, it does look interesting.

Best TV, Movies, Video Games of 2011

Ground Rules first. This is a list of the best TV shows, movies and video games that I saw (played) for the first time in 2011. The TV/movies/games didn’t have to be distributed in 2011. And this is the best TV/movies/video games I saw(played) this year in no particular order.

  • Super 8 – I absolutely hated the ending and think Abrams blew it with the monster and how he handled the dads. But the first half to two-thirds was a well done movie that was ultimately undone by a poor ending. My review.
  • Captain America – One of the better super hero movies recently and it manages the trick of making the super hero film into a war movie while still being a super hero film. My review.
  • The Muppets – Jason Segal manages to bring back the Muppets into relevance without damaging anything that came before. Not really science fiction or fantasy, but a good, fun film. My review
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes – Surprisingly good prequel to Planet of the Apes that was a lot smarter than the previews made it out to be. My Review
  • Alphas  – After several disappointing super hero shows on the major networks, Syfy shows everyone how it’s done. Interesting characters that fight bad guys, but the show focuses on the characters more than the super hero schtick. My review.
  • Once Upon A Time – Interesting but a little flawed fairy tale show that distinguishes itself from the charge that it is a bad Fables ripoff. But it’s dark side might harm it’s family audience. My review.
  • Batman Arkham City – OK. I haven’t had a chance to actually review this one yet. But if you liked the Arkham Asylum game, then you are going to love this one. They take the best of the first game and add to it with more tricks and goodies as well as multiple storylines, multiple characters and more powers.

The Adjustment Bureau movie review

As a huge Philip K Dick fan, I love to see that his stories are being spread out to a wider audience by making them into movies. But I am somewhat conflicted since most of the movies are mediocre at best. The latest movie to make its way to my HBO subscription is The Adjustment Bureau. Based off a short story from Philip K Dick about a man who accidentally gets a peek behind the scenes of life, the movie pleasantly kept a lot of the same basic ideas with only a change in theme. Dick’s story (“The Adjustment Team”) is about reality (as a lot of his stories are) while the movie is more about predestination. Let’s take a look at the movie. (Warning: Spoilers ahoy).

The Muppets movie review

Just to be clear, this is a review of the 2011 The Muppets, not the 1979 The Muppet Movie.

Its time to play the music
Its time to light the lights
Its time to meet the muppets on the Muppet Show tonight.

There was a lot of worry about the Jason Segal revamp of The Muppets, especially after it was slammed by Frank Oz. When the last of the major Muppet creators slams the project, it’s never a good sign. But I was pleasantly surprised. Rather than go back and show an origin (which would have basically been a retelling of The Muppet Movie), Segal (co-writer Nicholas Stoller and director James Bobin) decided to go forward and tell a current age story, one where the Muppets heyday is over and they aren’t popular any more. So, now:

Its time to get things started
On the most sensantional
Inspirational
Celebrational
Muppet-ational
This is what we call The Muppet Show!

Paul movie review

I absolutely loved Shaun of the Dead. It, along with Zombieland, are the only undead movies I can rewatch. So, I was very excited when I saw that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were going to star in a science fiction alien comedy. And out came Paul. I don’t want to give the impression that Paul was a bad movie, since it wasn’t. But it wasn’t as good as Shaun of the Dead, just to set expectations. So, let’s go and see what Paul is about.

Apollo 18 movie review

Somehow, I got talked into going to see Apollo 18. I knew it wasn’t going to be good since it only had  18% on Rotten Tomatoes, but I wondered how bad it could be. Well I’m glad I saw it, since now I can warn the rest of you away from seeing it. This is a boring, horrible movie. It isn’t good as a horror movie and doesn’t even try as a science fiction movie. And, worst of all, it’s boring. The movie focuses the last hour of the movie on the two astronauts who are on the moon. So we spend an hour focusing on two people and, in the end, we know nothing about them. They are simply props there to speak dialogue which advances the so-called plot. So, lets see how the movie got this bad.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes movie review

Having missed the Tim Burton remake of Planet of the Apes, I went into Rise of the Planet of the Apes only having seen the original movie. The movie trailers made it look interesting and I heard some decent reviews, so we decided to go and see it. Truly, how bad could it be with apes fighting humans? I was surprised. This summer action movie deals more with the drug testing and approval process than it does with ape fighting. I’m surprised that such a low key movie could be a summer blockbuster. So, let’s go visit Caesar and see what makes him rise.

Defending Your Life by Albert Brooks

Originally I was going to review Albert Brooks new book 2030, but the first 100 pages read more like an essay than a novel. So I decided to put it back on the shelf and try to read it again later, since I’m getting backed up on books. But, since I still love Albert Brooks, I decided to review my favorite movie of his, Defending Your Life. Brooks generally only releases a movie every 5-6 years (and 2030 reads more like a movie than a book so it might have started as a screenplay) and generally they are very high quality. With Defending Your Life, Brooks takes on a whole range of topics including love and the afterlife. So let, see what is worth defending in your life.
