Miyazaki discussed his next film

On the Studio Ghibli blog, there is some information about Miyazaki’s next film:

At Monday’s press conference for Kokuriko-Zaka Kara, Hayao Miyazaki discussed the movie’s theme song, Sayonara no Natsu, and reveals details into the pre-production of his next feature film.  If Ghibli is still following their “Five-Year Plan,” then Miyazaki-san’s following movie will be in production for two years, and be released in 2013.

Miyazaki Week: Kiki’s Delivery Service movie review

Continuing on with Miyazaki Week, we next come to my daughter’s favorite Miyazaki movie, Kiki’s Delivery Service. Based on a book by Eiko Kadono, this is a sweet coming of age story for a young witch. It’s also the first movie in the Studio Ghibli/Disney relationship. I have mixed feelings about that relationship. On one hand, the partnership makes sure that every Miyazaki movie will be released in the US theaters and get a DVD. But, on the other hand, I’m not sure Disney is doing a great job marketing Miyazaki and his films. So, let’s go visit Kiki.

Syfy’s Alphas and Rainn Wilson’s Super

Over at IO9, there is a short preview of the new superhero show on Syfy, Alphas:

Last night Syfy premiered their brand new TV line up, including a first look at their new superhero drama Alphas. We’ve got an exclusive interview with two of the cast members, and the first ever teaser trailer!

IO9 also has a short scene of Ellen Page in Rainn Wilson’s Super:

The incredible wrongness in James Gunn’s superhero comedy Super doesn’t just come from Rainn Wilson or Nathan Fillion — Wilson’s sidekick, Ellen Page, gets seriously sick as well. Just check out our exclusive clip featuring Page trying on her costume.

Dune movie is dead (for now)

According to Deadline, the Dune movie is dead for now:

Paramount has turned loose the giant worm, and everything else that was part of the seminal Frank Herbert science fiction novel series Dune. The studio’s four-year attempt to make a movie out of the franchise has fallen by the wayside. Paramount and the rights holders came to a parting of the ways as the rights lapsed. “Paramount’s option has expired and we couldn’t reach an agreement,” said Richard P. Rubinstein, who controls the rights to what is considered the biggest-selling science fiction book ever. “I’m going to look at my options, and whether I wind up taking the script we developed in turnaround, or start over, I’m not sure yet.”

Limitless Book review

I didn’t realize that the new movie (Limitless) was based off a book I had already read and reviewed, The Dark Fields (my review) by Alan Glynn. Now, the book and the movie are very different stories (as discussed by Alan Glynn and screenwriter Leslie Dixon(writer on Hairspray, The Thomas Crown Affair and Mrs. Doubtfire) on IO9), so I am sort of curious how big the changes are.

Movie Review: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

I was always a Star Wars kid. I loved Star Wars and had little interest in Star Trek. My Dad and older brother were both into Star Trek, so I saw a lot of the episodes (including the Animated Series). I went to see the first Star Trek movie and wasn’t that impressed. It wasn’t bad, but nothing to get excited about. Then the second movie came out. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was a movie to get excited about. There was action, ideas, characters and growth. This movie made me a Star Trek fan. So lets go back to the future and rediscover Khan.

RoboCop Movie Review

The Kickstarter project to get a RoboCop statue in Detroit amused me enough to go back and re-watch the movie. There were some critics when the movie came out who criticized the violence, but that’s missed the forest for the trees. The violence is used in the purpose of the story, not just to have violence. But my favorite story about Robocop is the sequels. After his success in comics, Frank Miller was approached to work on Robocop 2 and (as the rumor goes) his story idea was changed so much before being filmed that he was able to re-use the story proposal for Robocop 3. So, let’s revisit the future Detroit and find out who was RoboCop.

Night Watch movie review

Timur Bekmambetov is probably the most well known Russian director working today. He’s made several successful Russian movies and even a big budget Hollywood movie (Wanted) that was a lot of fun despite the horrible screenplay. But his first blockbuster film was Night Watch. Based on the popular book of the same name, Night Watch was a huge hit in Russia and was released world wide (with a limited release in the US). After it came out on DVD, the cult status of the movie grew and Bekmambetov has become a hot director world wide. So, who are the Night Watch?

Stranger Than Fiction movie review

One of the interesting things to watch with actors is the desire for comedic actors to be taken seriously and for serious actors to be seen as comedic. On one hand, I applaud their desire to stretch out their talents to new realms, but on the other hand it does cause some bad movies. Will Ferrell took his turn with a dramatic role with Stranger Than Fiction. And while it isn’t great, it is an interesting idea with decent execution and a wonderful cast. So, what is the movie about?
