After spending a couple books on the history of Rome, Steven Saylor is back to Gordianus the Finder. But the newest book, The Seven Wonders, is not a novel. It’s a linked collection of short stories with the common theme being, The Seven Wonders of the World. This is actually Saylor’s second collection of Gordianus short stories (A Gladiator Dies Only Once is the other one) and it’s nice to get some more Gordianus. So let’s see what Gordianus is up to.

Empire by Steven Saylor
Empire by Steven Saylor is a sequel to Roma and picks up with the same family at the end of the reign of Augustus. Saylor mentions in the author’s note that this is one of the more documented times in ancient history. There is a substantial number of authors and historians at this time, so we have great records of all the major figures of the time, often from numerous sources. But, I think all the detail might have caused problems for Saylor.
Roma by Steven Saylor
Roma by Steven Saylor is billed as the Novel of Ancient Rome and it tracks the history of Rome from it’s trading days, through the founding by Remus and Romulus and up to the beginning of Augustus’ reign. Saylor’s Gordianus the Finder series (which I’ll review at another time) show him as a master of telling stories in Roman settings. So it’s natural that he would attempt a larger portrait of Rome.
