Torchwood: Children of Earth

Since I started watching Torchwood with the ongoing Miracle Day series, I have become curious about the previous series. Everyone I talked to mentioned Children of Earth as the best series, so I decided to try it out. And I am so glad that I did. It’s a short (5 episode) series and the length means that the action is pretty much non-stop. The only problem I have now, is that the ongoing action of Children of Earth makes Miracle Day seem too slow. So, let’s see what the Children of Earth are up to.

Alphas TV show review

Every year, the networks roll out some new superhero shows to see if they can catch fire like Heroes season 1 did. This past season we had No Ordinary Family and The Cape. Both had promise and both severely underwhelmed critically and with audiences. As Smallville rounds to a close, we are left with no superhero shows on TV. Into this void comes Syfy’s Alphas. So, let’s take a look at the show and see if it’s worthwhile.

Torchwood: Miracle Day review

Last year was my first year watching Dr. Who. Along with not having watched the Doctor previously, I also missed out on Torchwood. I had heard good things on the mini-series, Children of Earth, so when I saw that Starz was showing the new season, I decided to start watching. The good news is that it is easy to pick up even for a new viewer such as myself. And with the pilot of the new 10 episode season airing this past Friday, I finally got a chance to see what’s going on. Read on for more about Torchwood: Miracle Day.

Lego Star Wars Cartoon

With the success of the Lego Star Wars video games, not to mention the actual Legos, it was only a matter of time before they moved it to a cartoon:

Though The Clone Wars animated series has obviously garnered a big audience of Star Wars fans on Cartoon Network, the series just might be a bit too intense for some of the younger viewers who still want to journey into a galaxy far, far away. Therefore, children and parents alike might be happy to hear about Lucasfilm’s announcement of a new 30-minute animated special called LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace which will air on Cartoon Network on Friday, July 22nd at 7/6c.

Outcasts TV show review

I was going to take the time and review the new BBC show Outcasts. The show aired early in the year in Britain, and is appearing during the Dr. Who hiatus on BBC America. I even watched it twice to make sure of my opinions and can confirm that I really didn’t care about the show. The only reason I watched it (beside the science fiction nature of the show) was because it was replacing Dr. Who, so I was already expecting to watch something a this time. And was I disappointed by the premise. Since we are in a low tide of TV shows right now, I’ll probably keep watching for a few more episodes. So, let’s see what it was about.

Falling Skies TV pilot review

In a idea that sounds very familiar to viewer of V,  an alien invasion has taken over Earth and a rag-tag bunch of survivors are out to win it back. But, unlike that show, Falling Skies isn’t half bad. Starring Noah Wylie and pretty much no one else you would have heard of (except possibly Colin Cunningham), Falling Skies is fairly standard alien invasion genre stuff, but it is handled well. So, let’s see what’s happening with it.

Darren Aronofsky and Michael Chabon…

Really that’s all I need to say. But I’ll mention more from Variety:

Darren Aronofsky is on board to direct “Hobgoblin,” HBO’s upcoming drama pilot in development.

Pilot, to be written by Michael Chabon and his wife, Ayelet Waldman, is about a group of con men and magicians who use their skills of deception to help defeat Hitler and the Germans during WWII.

It kinda sounds like Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis.

Salman Rushdie science fiction TV series

Exciting new for Showtime, Salman Rushdie is developing a science fiction series for them:

The new work, to be called The Next People is being made for Showtime, a US cable TV network. The plot will be based in factual science, Rushdie said, but will contain elements of the supernatural or extra-terrestrial. Although filming is yet to begin, a pilot has been commissioned and written. It will have what Rushdie described as “an almost feature-film budget”.

Showtime has announced that the hour-long drama will deal with the fast pace of change in modern life, covering the areas of politics, religion, science, technology and sexuality. “It’s a sort of paranoid science-fiction series, people disappearing and being replaced by other people,” said Rushdie, 63, best known for Midnight’s Children and The Satanic Verses. “It’s not exactly sci-fi, in that there is not an awful lot of science behind it, but there are certainly elements which are not naturalistic,” he said in the interview, which will appear in full in the Observer later this month.

Dr. Who season 6 finally gets good (Spoilers ahoy)

I’ve been waiting to blog about Dr. Who season 6. But, so far the season has been mediocre (at best). The opening two-parter was decent, but the next few episodes just never interested me. Then we finally come to “A Good Man Goes to War” and the season explodes into greatness. Here we get the Doctor as a legend and the origin of River Song. What’s not to love? So, let’s see what happened and if you haven’t seen the episode yet, go watch it and come back.

ABC’s Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, ABC optioned Bill Willingham’s Fables and were looking to make a pilot. Then, a few months ago, it was announced that the producers of Lost were working on a fairy tale themed pilot for ABC. There were many, many assumptions that these were the same thing. But, as ABC announced this week, the pilot is not related to Fables. Instead it’s called Once Upon A Time. Here’s the preview:

Now, I have many concerns and questions about this show. Mainly about how it will compare to Fables and whether ABC would have been better off using Fables as a starting point, rather than create a whole new story. I most likely will be tuning in for the pilot, but how long I keep watching will be dependent on how well they can run the show. And I’ll be curious, since it will be leading into Desperate Housewives, whether it will be closer to that tone of a show or closer to Lost.
