NBC’s new sci-fi/fantasy shows

NBC’ has two new science-fiction/fantasy shows coming on in the fall. Grimm will be on Fridays, right after Chuck and Awake will be a mid-season replacement. Head over to IO9.com to see some previews:

The magical police procedural Grimm is about a detective who finds out he’s part of the mystical family of monster hunters called the Grimms.

The next genre drama really has us excited. It stars Jason Issacs, whose life becomes fractured after he and his family are in a car accident. From that tragic day on, his character Detective Michael Britten begins living in two different realities. In one, his wife died and son survived the crash; in the other, his son died and his wife survived

Is Dr. Who too scary?

The Guardian offers opposing viewpoints on whether or not the new Dr. Who is too scary:

Yes:

The new Doctor Who is too dark and convoluted. I’m a lifelong Whovian, but in the Matt Smith era there’s been too much doctorin’ of the Tardis by Steven Moffat and his writers.

No:

My seven-year-old son fancies himself as fearless. All it has taken to disprove his belief in his own bravery these past couple of weeks has been to turn on BBC1 on Saturday tea-time. He’ll crouch down at one end of the sofa, curling himself into a ball, until I ask if he wants a cuddle. He’ll scuttle over, and squeeze himself into me, without ever daring to take his eyes off the screen.

Dr. Who season premiere

Yes I’m a week late, but I didn’t feel comfortable reviewing only the first part of a two-part episode. After last season with a new showrunner with a new doctor and cast, the season started good, slowed down in the middle and then ended with some of the best TV science fiction I’ve ever seen, I was excited for Dr. Who to come back. The first two weeks were a two part set in America with time travel, Richard Nixon, the moon landing, aliens and a young girl’s voice in a space suit. So, let’s see how it was.

Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe

One of my guilty pleasure shows is Burn Notice. The A-Teamish spy show is a fun little show that isn’t too serious and has enough explosions and spy tips to make a fun hour. And with the inimitable Bruce Campbell in a supporting role, then what else is there to say. So, just for fun, the Burn Notice team decided to give the fans a little fun and show a prequel featuring Bruce Campbell in The Fall of Sam Axe. It was on this past weekend, but with Game of Thrones premiering, I just didn’t have time to watch it until tonight. So, how did Sam Axe end up in Miami?

Game of Thrones TV show review

Having only recently started on the Song of Ice and Fire, by George RR Martin, I don’t have a lot of the history that a lot of other fans do with the series. But, having read the book, I’m not going into the series blind. The HBO name on the series usually carries the sign of quality (John from Cincinnati notwithstanding), and the fact that they are the ones producing the show (rather than AMC or Showtime) means that there is a sense of quality and a decent budget. So, let’s see if winter is coming.

Chaos TV show

Have you been watching Chaos? It’s an interesting failure on CBS that is still possibly worth watching and it’s on tonight, the graveyard known as Friday night TV. One of the problems I have when watching TV is that I often fall for what a show can be and get upset when it never quite arrives there. There are more shows than I can count where I started watching because of a cool concept or a great setup and a couple months down the road, I start wondering why I’m still watching it. My fear is that Chaos is going to turn into one of those shows. So, what is it? Never mind…

Camelot after 3 episodes

And I’m done. I reviewed the pilot of Camelot on Starz when it previewed at the end of February. As I noted at the time, the only good parts of the pilot were Merlin, Lot and Morgan. For those of you who watching, you know what has happened to those characters. I’ll go into it a little bit and explain why I’ve decided to stop watching after the break. Warning for those who haven’t seen it. There will be spoilers.
